- Annotation associated with the photograph in an early finding aid: "When the Lawsons arrived the trees were closer to the beach, although they were mostly alder according to Elizabeth's diary. The Ferry building was built in 1913 and the original Ambleside pier about the same time. Much logging had been done from mid-1880s and there were several forest fires over the years leaving those spikey looking limbs."
