- Artist Biography
- Jeff Wall obtained his MA from the University of British Columbia (1970) and worked on his Ph. D at the Courtauld Institute in London (1970-1973). Along with Rodney Graham and Ian Wallace, he was a founding member of the photo conceptualist movement in Vancouver, which began in the late 1960s and early 1970s. His large, back-lit photographic works have a cinematic impact that he has called “a simultaneous recovery of film and painting.” Wall has always had a deep interest in painting and art history, and he examines these disciplines in his photographs through references to historical paintings, creating narrative compositions.
