- Artist Biography
- Babak Golkar, born in Tehran and lives and works in Vancouver, exhibits internationally and has developed a distinct practice that often engages critical investigation and renegotiation of spaces between cultural and socio-economical registers. The strategies involved in his practice merge and examine originally discrete systems and forms, asserting underlying unity as well as antagonistic elements. By extension, new forms and meanings emerge from re-contextualization. Golkar’s engagement with the idea of clay derives from its slow process, which allows for a different model of production and time for thought and reflection; a model that can be studied and adapted to address imbalances in contemporary life. The clay-based artworks are the artist’s reconciliation of a medium conventionally defined as craft and therefore outside of critical contemporary art discourse.
