Narrative: May Day celebration in West Vancouver on May 24th, Queen Victoria's birthday, began in 1930, when the Parent-Teachers Association of Hollyburn and Pauline Johnson Schools called a meeting at which the six-year-old Mavis Whipple was chosen as Miss West Vancouver to preside over the spring fair. The title was changed in 1931 to May Queen, the first of which would become a yearly tradition until 1974. May Day became the opening celebration of summer, with a parade along Marine Drive, where May Queen and her attendants were followed by the Reeve and Alderman, and in later years, by Mayor and members of West Vancouver Council. May Day celebration was of great importance during the depression years, as it symbolized the shared spirit of renewal and mutual celebration in the community.
